In simple words, it is a wish that the person celebrates many more birthdays in the future.

This means:
“I hope you celebrate many more wonderful birthdays in your life.”
Is “Many Many Happy Returns of the Day” Correct English?

- Happy Birthday!
- Wishing you a wonderful birthday.
- Many happy returns!
- Have a fantastic birthday.
The phrase “many many happy returns of the day” is not wrong, but repeating “many” twice makes it more emotional and expressive rather than strictly formal.
Origin and History of “Happy Returns”
The expression “happy returns” has a long history in English. The word “return” was traditionally used to describe something coming back again.
For example:
- The return of a season
- The return of an anniversary
- The return of an important occasion
Over time, people began using “happy returns” for birthdays and anniversaries, expressing the hope that these joyful occasions would return again and again.
The phrase became especially common in British English and later spread to other parts of the world.
Why Do People Say “Returns of the Day”?
Many people find the phrase confusing because a birthday does not actually “return” like an object. The meaning comes from the idea that every year, the same date returns on the calendar.
For example:
A person’s birthday is:
September 8, 1995
Every year:
September 8 returns
So when someone says:
“Happy returns of the day”
they are saying:
“May this beautiful day return to you happily year after year.”
